However, if a customer bought a licence as a result of advice given by TV Licensing that is later revealed to be incorrect they can claim up to six years’ worth of refund, roughly £954.

A refund of up to half of the TV licence fee could be claimed for licence holders that have a blind certificate issued by a local authority or ophthalmologist but did not claim the blind concession when they bought their licence.

Britons who receive the free TV Licence for over 75s should receive an automatic refund of any unused months on their current licence when they came of age.

They note that customers paying by Direct Debit must not cancel it when applying for a refund, the department will do this automatically when the refund is arranged.
